Hard to get Smaragd from Wachau. Well worth the effort to find out yourself. Beautiful rounded complex and dry structure which can only be ranged with age. Earl grey smokyness gives away the aging. Bit of CO2 gas in the glass. Delicate integration of flavours and a bit of saltiness towards the long finish.

3++ 100% Riesling grapes from Wachau area. Traditional winemaking with indigenous yeasts and maturation in oak barrels. Pale yellow color with golden highlights. Nose of pear, peach, apricot and honey. In the mouth it is creamy well balanced with a good acidity and freshness. Not so mineral and neither so dry but with a good aging potential. The final is persistent enough with a bitterish aftertaste that it ruins a bit the tasting. In any case with further aging it should improve.

Some herbs and lovage tones. Elegant soft and fuller ripeness. In the directions of Loibenberg but softer. Nice and typical for Wachau and Alzinger!

2017 vintage. Pale straw yellow. Medium bodied, high acid. Dry. Schist minerality and pronounced stonefruit with pineapple and lychee. L&J’s pick. Poured at Rieslingfeier 2018

The colour has deepened over time, becoming yellow gold. Its nose gives those typical petrol notes, enforced through the ageing. Besides this there are gorgeous ripe stone fruit and citrus aromas, linking with the minerality and extending to the palette. On the palette a strong backbone where the acidity has done its job to great extend. A long and intense finish conclude this excellent Riesling. A wine that has proven its ageing potential, without losing ground, moving into its second life.

3 stars, better to say 2 and 3/4 stars. The visit in Alzinger's winery was a bit weird and can't be compared with the hospitality of Mr. Gattinger, Fink or Mrs. Pichler in Pichler-Krutzler winery. Anyway we wanted to give this winery a chance so we bought maybe 20 bottles. I hoped that Riesling Smaragd from one of the most famous vineyards in Wachau (Loibenberg) will be something extra. It is not. The acidity is higher, aftertaste is quite simple and don't make me to drink again. Aroma is an average.

Appearance: lemon, clear, medium intens. Nose: youthfull, clean condition, medium intens. Aromas of stonefruit, citrus, wet stone. Palate: medium+ acidity, medium+ body, nicely balanced. Assessment: outstanding wine. Potential for aging.

Minerals, peach,wet stone, petroleum, honey, apricot, fennel, white blossoms, lime, A dry medium bodied wine with high acidity and a long finish. Medium+ intensity on the nose and palate. Great balance, great length, complex and good intensity

More of a seductive Smaragd than a textbook Riesling, the Alzinger Liebenberg is a lovable wine (yet another nomen est omen wine). Apricot, pineapple, honey notes, a generous and aromatic palate with clear traces of residual sugar. A very good wine, but it doesn’t have enough drive.
